GROUP G DEEP DIVE: Salah vs De Bruyne — The West Coast Arena Awaits
T-4 days. Four fighters. Three knockout spots. One coast that doesn't forgive slow starters.
Group G isn't the flashiest draw at World Cup 2026 — no host, no reigning champion. But this is where a single superstar can drag a nation through, and where the lowest-ranked team in the tournament might still land a punch that changes everything.
Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand. Seattle. Los Angeles. Vancouver. The West Coast Arena is ready.
THE FIGHT CARD
Belgium vs Egypt — June 15, Lumen Field, Seattle
Iran vs New Zealand — June 15, SoFi Stadium, Inglewood
| Fighter | FIFA Rank (Nov 2025) | Pedigree | |---|---|---| | 🇧🇪 Belgium | 8 | 15th finals; 3rd place (2018) | | 🇮🇷 Iran | 20 | 7th finals | | 🇪🇬 Egypt | 34 | 4th finals | | 🇳🇿 New Zealand | 86 | 3rd finals |
BELGIUM — THE RED DEVILS STRIKE FIRST
Belgium arrive off a 5-0 win over Tunisia on June 6. Five different scorers — Trossard, De Ketelaere, De Bruyne, Lukébakio, Raskin. Kevin De Bruyne curled one in from range. Jeremy Doku tormented the left flank. Thibaut Courtois kept a clean sheet.
The names are still heavy — De Bruyne, Lukaku, Tielemans, Trossard — but the identity is sharper and more vertical. They open against Egypt in Seattle on June 15. Belgium beat Egypt 2-1 in a 2022 friendly, but Egypt just pushed Brazil hard in Cleveland. This opener won't be a walk.
EGYPT — SALAH'S WORLD CUP MOMENT
Mohamed Salah came off the bench against Brazil on June 6. Egypt lost 2-1, but Mostafa Zico equalized seven minutes after Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring, and Salah forced Brazil to defend properly in the second half.
Egypt are at their 4th World Cup — last in 2018. Salah on this stage is a different weapon than Salah in a qualifier. Héctor Cúper's plan against Belgium writes itself: sit deep, absorb, strike on the transition through Salah, Omar Marmoush, and Zico.
IRAN — ORGANIZED AND OBSTINATE
Iran beat Mali 2-0 on June 5 in Antalya — Saeid Ezatolahi and Ramin Rezaeian scored. That's three wins from four friendlies in Turkey this year.
Iran are at their 7th World Cup. They open against New Zealand at SoFi on June 15. Belgium vs Iran on June 21 is a first meeting between the two nations. Iran's game is compact, disciplined, and built to frustrate.
NEW ZEALAND — THE SPLIT SCREEN
Haiti routed them 4-0 on June 3. Three days later, they held England to 1-0 in Tampa — Harry Kane's stoppage-time header the only goal against a side that took 23 shots.
New Zealand's 3rd World Cup, first since 2010. They're the lowest-ranked team in the 48-team field. In a four-team group where three sides advance, that ranking is a label — not a sentence. One more friendly against Iran before the SoFi opener.
WEST COAST VERDICT
Belgium arrive hot. Egypt arrive dangerous. Iran arrive organized. New Zealand arrive battle-tested against England.
Group G kicks off June 15 — Seattle first, then the lights of SoFi Stadium. Coach Bola's full tournament model drops June 9.
Step into the Arena. Group G won't wait.
